Cracked/Shattered

I finished the "Shattered" painting this morning... I'm thinking of re-naming it "Cracked". Sorry some of these photos are pretty bad, a lot of the subtle shading and floral designs on her skin are washed out. I promise it looks a lot better/crisper in person.

I'm pretty pleased with how it came out, you all had fantastic suggestions. Do the cracks read as cracks now?

Let me know what you guys think!

fantastic! my favourite thing about this piece is how well the blue tattoos and red facial colors play off of eachother. the whole thing is beautiful =)

i noticed something and i dont know if it was intentional or not but im informing you nonetheless...it looks like one of the leaves in the nest was left uncolored. just making sure if its a mistake you fix it before sending it off somewhere =)

one more thing (Sorry this comment is so long!) i've been meaning to ask you what you use for your lineart. i have been trying to get back into painting with gouache and watercolours, and whatever you are doing looks like a good solution to having nice colored lines.

you are my absolute favourite artist <3

Thanks Rin!

Yeah I noticed the leaves too, the top image is newer than the photo-montage image. The revised version also has pink along the edges of the cracks, slightly darker hair, and slightly lighter edges of the cracked porcelain.... also I cleaned up the vertical edges of the yellow background.

I pretty much only draw with colorase brand pencils. (I prefer tuscan red, carmine red, and light blue.) Once I like a sketch I scan it into the computer, make it black and white, and use levels to increase the contrast and print it out at the size I want to paint. I use a light box to transfer the sketch, still using colorase pencils, and then paint in washes. After the gouache is dry I go back over any areas that got covered with the pencil again to bring back up the linework. Be selective about where you bring it back up so it doesn't look too overpowered by the lines.

Hope that was helpful!

Oh, and AFTER you transfer the drawing, but BEFORE you paint, mount the paper onto museum board or wood (using matte medium as the glue) so it won't warp.

thanks you! im so excited you went into detailed steps. I feel like the entirety of the finished product depends on the steps you use to get there, and that's what i lack the most knowledge in, so this helps a lot!

i never thought about using a light box to help with the final lines(or using matte medium as a glue) or sheesh, using colored pencils! im excited to experiment =)

thanks so much again!

The cracks are much more cracky now, and I love that blue with the golden yellow background.

Great job, Coop! I really like how and where you broke the edges of the elipse to incorporate the china pattern.

I think 'cracked' fits this better. Shattered makes me think she would be blown to smithereens and in pieces on the floor.

Having the eggs in there with her makes me think that something might be hatching out of her, too. I'm surprised you didn't carry the cracks through into at least one of the eggs... but I suppose it might be too small to read. How big is this one?

Thanks guys!

UL-The painting is pretty small, about 5"x9" image size. I thought about putting cracks in the eggs but I decided not to just because I didn't want it to be too busy with detail, and just like you said, it's a small read. I am apt to changing my mind though, and it would be super easy with a colored pencil to add it in... so... it's still a possibility. Either way, it was a fantastic suggestion! (And your porcelain-rendering suggestions were invaluable.)
